What’s your guilty pleasure when it comes to music?
Even the purest of the purists have those songs that they secretly can’t get enough of, but surely would be disowned by their fellow, dedicated to seeing music only one way peers.....who by the way, probably carry the weight of some of those same secret desires for the epitome of what they feel is wrong with a particular genre of music.
I get it though!
You have no idea how many times I’ve tried to turn off “Thotiana” by Blueface, but couldn’t resist the way it took over my body, and had me doing the Thotiana dance in the drivers seat of my car.
Hell, I even caught myself thoroughly enjoying my attempts at rapping off beat like Blueface (which I failed miserably at....it’s harder than it.....sounds).
Now that the cat is out the bag, I hope none of my music homies revoke any of my credibility for being a reliable source of knowledge for “good music”.
I can’t help it though.....
There are just some songs that, no matter how hard I try to hate them, I just end up being hooked on them even more.
What is it though about those songs that just catch us off guard, and go against everything we believe that makes our favorite music good?
I don’t have the answer to that, and honestly, as someone who considers himself a rebel in his own regards, I don’t think I want to find out the answer to that anymore.
I just wanna enjoy what I enjoy, and not worry so much anymore whether the song fits the “rules” or not.
Do you have these same feelings about any songs in particular?
Are you afraid that because you’re a diehard Nas fan, that you’d be disowned by the hip hop community, if you also happen to chipper up when you hear a Soulja Boy song?
You shouldn’t have to feel the need to hide certain playlists around certain people, or PRETEND like you hate a song to remain in “compliance” with the “formula” for “good music”.
I honestly never thought I’d reach this place of freedom where I’m ok with admitting that I like certain songs that I would have completely BASHED in the past.
I like what I like, and I encourage you to give it a try too, if you’ve been pressured into believing that you can’t like “this” if you also like “that”.
Music is the most beautiful thing in the universe to me for that very reason!
There are no rules......and any part of anyone’s identity can be connected to SO MANY different kinds of songs.
By the way.....I’m about to go listen to Blueface right now!
And then I’m gonna listen to some Black Thought
And then I’m gonna listen to some Led Zeppelin.....then probably some Pharaoh Sanders!
And I’m not gonna feel bad about mixing things that “aren’t supposed to be mixed”!
